Wireless Networking

(1) Uses unlicensed bands of Radio Frequency.
(2) Hub like communication, one device can send at a time.
(3) Shared signals/bandwidth.
(4) Half duplex.
(5) Uses CSMA/CA.

The unlicensed frequencies in USA that wireless networks use are

(1) 802.11 N, uses MIMO (Multiple input multiple output), uses multiple antennas.
(2) Channels are essentially ranges of frequencies.
(3) When there are overlapping channels, then in that overlapping range the signals are degraded or signals are unavailable in that range.
(4) To see what channels the people are using around us, we use Channel Sniffer (just like packet sniffer). If I find that there are two channels say 1 and 11, and if I decide to use channel 2 then I will cause problem for the people of channel 1 as channel 2 overlaps with channel 1.
(5) Wireless access point has a range of 300 feet without abstraction in the way.
(6) 802.11 A, has range 270/280 feet.
(7) More desks and walls in the way mean shorter range.
(8) Clean Channel means a channel without interference.

SSID (service set identifier)

It’s the name of your wireless network. We can have one access point that can send multiple SSIDs.

Roaming is possible with extended service set (ESS).
