Basic Concepts

What is a Network
Network is a collection of devices that can communicate together.

Internet
Most people use it as backup; it’s not secure, not even so fast as compared to WAN service provider such AT&T setup.  So a lot of agencies use dedicated WAN and buy a private WAN link. Here we get a fast link, guaranteed services; we have a maintained link that never really goes down. The only problem in this case is cost.
Due to this cost some people prefer internet, while other prefer private WAN.

Applications that use Network
Web browsers and FTP
(Companies also have intranet, rather than internet. Intranet is just like an internet sort of system inside the Organization that has private data such as corporate financial information like information of shipping that is coming in and out of the company, employee phones list, we can access our organization own web pages from internal web server and can download all that into a web browsers.)
Database Application
Instant messengers.
Email
Online games.
Considerations for network application are
Speed
Delay
Availability

LAN links Speed
10 Mbps
100 Mbps
1000 Mbps (1Gbps)

WAN links Speed (are usually slow than LAN connection)
56 Kbps (still in some parts of the world).
T1 line (1.544 Mbps)
